Hucknall Town Reserves made the long journey to Leicestershire for their midweek NSL1 fixture against league leaders and new boys FCV Grace Dieu.
The home side started well and stroked the ball around nicely on the large 3G pitch. Hucknall took a little time to settle, but eventually found a pattern of play to counter the oppositions tactics.
Grace took the lead with a well taken goal, but Hucknall struck back soon after when Josh Vere broke up play in the final third and set Brad Evans free to score his first goal for the club with a well taken finish.
Hucknall then took the lead themselves when a great move on the left-hand side set Kieran Orange free. He drove forward into the penalty area and smashed the ball home low to the bottom right corner. Yellows thought they had a good shout for a penalty not long afterwards when a Grace player appeared to handle the ball inside the box, but all appeals were waved away.
Just prior to half time the home side were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Hucknall penalty area after what looked like a great challenge from Hallam. Up stepped senior player Dan Brooks to strike a terrific shot that Hucknall keeper Alfie Clayton stood no chance of saving.
Half time: FCV 2-2 Hucknall Town Reserves
The second half was a cagey affair with both teams making all their substitutions. Clayton made a good save in a one on one with the Grace striker and showed some great handling to avert any danger from crosses. Whilst at the other end of the pitch Evans continued to look dangerous and Hucknall found lots of space in and around the opposition 18 yard box but just couldn’t find that final pass to setup a winning goal. But in the end the points were shared, which on balance was probably about the right result.
