Selston 2 Hucknall Town 0
Two late goals for Selton as they win the double
Hucknall Town fell to two late goals in their pursuit of the CML league cup against league Champions Selston FC.
The score line although flattering proved again how clinical Selston are in tight games when chances are at a premium, although the yellows will be rueing several missed chances of their home and for not making possession tell especially in the second half topped off with a needless free kick conceded with three minutes left on the clock.
The first half was an even affair but it was the yellows who forced the first corner with Dave Leak appealing for a push at the back post but nothing given and the ball harmlessly went out of play.
Matt Brian’s weak shot was saved by the Selston keeper with Joe Ashurst closing in on any mistake and then a golden opportunity was spurned when a Brian flick on put Ashley Whitt clear, he did well to take the ball around the keeper and with the goal gaping he chose power rather than composure and his first time shot cannoned back off the near post.
Selston had their first chance with a header from a corner tipped over by Mike Randall.
Joes Ashurst seized onto a loose pass on the edge of the Selston box but his shot was scuffed and rolled tamely into the Selston keeper’s hands. Next a Cayne Maxwell throw was flicked on by Jordan Phillips and the ball fell into the path of Josh Henry but on the stretch he blasted high and over.
A peach of a pass from the Selston midfield split the yellows backline and Mike Randall had to come out and clear another defence splitting pass sent Selston’s winger away with Maxwell stretching and missing his tackle again Randall had to save well.
A yellows free kick was wasted when Brain trying to find Ashurst with a clever ball passed straight to a Selston man on the end of the wall. Brian tried to make amends but again his shot was weak and wide.
From a Selston free kick their tall striker took the ball down well, turned and volley against the post. A ball played over the top of the yellows defence was headed clear on the edge of his box by Randall and then knocked back but wide of the goal and the teams went in level at half time.
The second half’ began with the yellows on the front foot but Ashurst’s free kick went high and over, Selston broke down the yellows middle but the final shot was wide of the target.
A ball was knocked down to Jaylee Hodgson but his shot was high and wide and then an Adam Nelson effort went wide. A yellows corner caused a scramble but the Selston defence crowded out Dave Leak and the danger was cleared.
Whitt played a ball into the box but Jordan Phillips could not get any power on his header and the ball fell into the Selston keeper’s arms. Another yellows corner fell to a yellows player but Ashurst and Leak got in each other’s way and the shot miss hit and cleared.
A clever back hell by Nelson fell to Ashurst but his half volley went agonisingly over.
The yellows dominance of the second half was all for nothing as with three minutes left on the clock they pressed the self-destruct button, the Selston winger received the ball but with Maxwell and Ashurst marking there was little danger but a rush of blood saw Whitt barge in and needlessly bundle the Selston man off the ball giving the referee no choice but to award a free kick in a dangerous area, this allowed Selston to get all their big men into the box and get the ball into them.
The free kick reached the unmarked Selston striker fortuitously off Hodgson’s head for him to score from close range.
The yellows responded with a corner but the ball wouldn’t sit up for a strike and the danger was cleared and on the break Selston broke and the ball was steered brilliantly over Randall to give Selston the league and cup double.
