Hucknall Town put in a very convincing showing in midweek away to Southwell, smashing four past the hosts as their league form continues to improve.
Morgan Bell came off of the bench to smash home a double, adding to a Craig Westcarr penalty and a Joe Ashurst half-volley to separate the two sides by a heavy margin.
The Yellows were unchanged from the side that dispatched Rainworth on Saturday afternoon, with Finlay Whyte and Kieron Lane still absent through injury. Hucknall stayed on the front foot from the first minute to the last, and quickly turned their heavy pressure into a goal as a neat one-two between Ashurst and Westcarr saw the former lash home from the edge on the half-volley just ten minutes in. Two more chances quickly fell for Westcarr and Kieran Knight as both made chances for the other that were blocked emphatically in the box, with the hosts backs on the ropes after 20. Just after the half-hour mark, Jamie Crawford showed excellent pace to explode past his opposing full-back to fashion a shooting chance, but the shot dragged wide of the far post. With just a minute remaining of the first half, Hucknall had a golden chance to double their money as the Southwell ‘keeper legged up Knight in a tussle for possession to give a penalty away, that Westcarr stepped up to smash home to his left on the stroke of half-time.
There was a great chance for Southwell to get one back five minutes into the second half as their attacker went down on the edge from a soft Aaron Short challenge, but the resultant free-kick was easily caught by Louis Kinnerley in the visiting goal. Aaron Lamb was the next to have a chance as a swift Hucknall break saw him work a yard away from the last man back, but the keeper stood firm to block away his side-footer. Bell was introduced bang on the hour mark, and took just a minute to make his impact as he touched a Knight cross from the right-hand side away from the keeper before belting it home on the line to make it three after 60. Cayne Maxwell almost added a fourth immediately after, racing onto Crawfords reverse pass to flash a low strike past the far post.
A fourth goal wasn’t to escape the Yellows however, and it was Bell at the double as he was right on time to smash home from close range to follow up fellow substitute Joe Butler’s strike off the post.
Incredibly, there was almost an amazing fifth as Joe Ashurst lined up a weak-footed effort from 30 yards that crashed back off of the bar, before Butler followed it up with a header that bounced back off the bar as well. Short had the final chance to strike, as a corner picked him out in the box to smash a header on goal, but the Southwell keeper kept him out with an unbelievable save to keep the score at four at full-time.
