Improved second half display helps Yellows beat Saffron Dynamo - Match report

Saffron 1-2 Yellows

Hucknall Town returned to winning ways on Wednesday evening after coming from behind to defeat Saffron Dynamo 2-1 at Kings Park.

The Yellows had to work hard to get the better of Dynamo, who held a slender one-goal advantage at half-time courtesy of forward Jamie Starbuck’s impressive long-range effort, which was scored in the 36th minute.

After the break, Town showed plenty of grit to pull themselves back into the contest, with substitute Joe Butler heading Courtney Bartley’s cross in via the post to level proceedings.

They completed the turnaround with just over ten minutes left, as Craig Westcarr made the most of some good build-up play from Sam Sims by slotting past home goalkeeper Tom Reeve from close range.

Having trailed Dynamo with half an hour left in the game, Hucknall were understandably very pleased to leave with all three points, as they are now back inside the United Counties League Division One play-off positions with four fixtures left.

However, Yellows manager Andy Graves was fairly critical of his side’s overall performance when speaking after the match.

He said: “We were poor weren’t we, we’ve got to be brutally honest. We were poor, yet we probably could’ve had six or seven [goals]. The quality in front of goal wasn’t quite there tonight unfortunately.

“We looked very nervous. Obviously, from Saturday, confidence was a bit low, and we know that we can play a lot better.

“With some big games coming up now, we’ve got to take more of the chances that come our way. Hopefully we’ve restored a little bit of confidence after Saturday.”

Graves was particularly eager to highlight the importance of the substitutions made on the night, with goalscorer Butler, Jamie Crawford and Grant Ryan all making a positive impact from the bench.

“[In the first half] I didn’t think we were playing through the thirds because we were too far apart, and we were tending to go too long because not enough people were offering themselves,” Graves stated.

“I thought we looked better in the second half, but again, it seemed like we were going nowhere, and that’s why I made the changes at a fairly early stage.

“The players being brought off were not necessarily playing badly, but we needed to just change things up and try something different. As soon as the subs had been made, we scored, which was definitely pleasing to see.”

Hucknall: Sharpe, Bartley, Brown, Sims, Short (c), Phillips, Lamb (Crawford 58’), Banister (Ryan 61’), Westcarr, Ashurst, Brian (Butler 26’).
