Sheffield FC tried to be the Heavyweight Champions, but Hucknall left them on the ropes!

Hucknall continued their perfect start to the league campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Sheffield FC, making it three wins from three and securing their best opening run since returning to Step 5 of the football pyramid.

In a tight contest played with intensity across the full 90 minutes, Hucknall were forced to dig deep. Sheffield had the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot after a handball was given when a shot was charged down, but the effort from 12 yards struck the post before being cleared to safety.

From that point on, the Yellows grew in confidence and showed the resilience that has become a feature of their strong start. The management team were quick to praise club captain and goalkeeper Alfie Smith-Eccles, whose commanding display and superb reaction save in the first half helped lay the foundations for the win.

Management Praise Smith-Eccles and Team Spirit

Rudy - “To come to Sheffield, knowing the tradition they have and the players they have, is a great win for us,” said Rudy. “But, to put it bluntly, it is just another game in the league. It was tough out there — very, very tough. We must mention Alfie, our goalkeeper. Superb.”

Rodger added: “I thought he was commanding his area brilliantly. His talking was excellent, and some of the saves he pulled off were superb. I’m buzzing for him — a clean sheet and three points.”

Rudy also highlighted the togetherness within the squad, saying: “The 1-0 victories are the hardest, but they are the most enjoyable. I have been a long time in football, but I have never seen togetherness like this. It is incredible.”

Law’s Header Seals the Points

The decisive moment came when Cal Law scored his first goal for the club. Another dangerous Dylan Rawson corner was met at the near post by Law, whose header took a touch off a Sheffield player, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

J.D. praised the squad’s reaction after the penalty miss: “We saw a big shift in the second half, especially after the penalty. We turned into men suddenly. We were winning first balls, winning second balls, and getting around each other. Up until we scored, I could not see us losing the game.”

He added: “The work rate was tremendous. That will be the minimum we expect. You have to work hard, and if you have quality as well, you can win games. The work rate was fantastic, but that is what they have to do every week.”

Rudy echoed that message, pointing to the team’s preparation and defensive discipline as crucial factors in the result. “We have a big emphasis on work rate,” he said. “We keep saying week in, week out that work rate will win you games. The quality comes through as well, and in the last 10 minutes we probably could have nicked another one.”
On defending, he added: “If you defend well, you will always be in with a chance. Sheffield were probably the better side in the first half and had some great chances, including the penalty, but we defended and defended. Then we got our break, and we are sitting here with three points.”

Focus Turns to Blackstones

Hucknall’s attention now turns to Blackstones, who sit near the bottom of the table at this early stage of the season. However, the management team know there are no easy games and insists the Yellows must remain fully focused.

“Blackstones are lively,” said J.D. “They always cause problems in the attacking end. We need to work on a plan, implement it, and hopefully get the win. We prepare for every game individually, and we will do all the preparation needed to try to get the three points on Saturday.”

Rudy closed by paying tribute to the travelling support: “We should never forget our fans. They were singing and chanting again, and it makes such a big difference. Thank you.”
