WHITMAN REFLECTS ON THE FINAL GAME OF THE SEASON

WHITMAN REFLECTS ON THE FINAL GAME OF THE SEASON

Paul Burley13 Apr - 13:13

"We have had our best finish for a number of seasons"

Saturday was our last match of the season and although the result was disappointing, we have had our best finish in a number of seasons, ending the season in eighth position.

First and foremost the club would like to thank all supporters for their continued support both home and away. There have been some excellent performances and results and as is always the case in football, some games where we would have hoped for points when we came away with nothing. But the supporters have been with us all the way.

We would also like to thank all of the coaching staff, physio staff and playing squad for all of their hard work and all of those volunteers behind the scenes who work tirelessly in the various areas, which make up the running of the football club.

For the final time this season the Manager Tris Whitman reflects on the final match where we visited now Champions, Boston Town.

"Saturdays final game of the season was a frustrating way to end what we will look back at, as a successful season.

"We knew we would be up against it as Boston needed a win to secure the title and we went into the game with a number of players unavailable and a squad that consisted of players that were not fully fit. That being said we can take nothing away from Boston who were ruthless, especially in the second half as we started to tire.

"We setup tactically different to how we have this season and I thought we looked solid as a team and frustrated them for the first 30 minutes.

"They scored a goal from a tidy finish but we were able to hold out until half time and going in at the break, we were relatively happy.

"I thought we started the second half brightly and had more moments in their half but lacked any quality in creating any clear cut opportunities. The second goal came at a crucial time for them and it was evident we looked physically and emotionally drained at that point. Boston then went on to score another four as we completely collapsed in the final twenty minutes.

"I couldn’t fault the effort from the lads as we were completely stretched with resources but we were a little disappointed to have conceded six on the final game of the season.

"We will now be taking a few weeks off before we start to plan for next season where we believe if we can keep the majority of the squad together and add some quality in areas we have identified, we can push to be closer to the playoffs next season.

"Overall it’s been a pleasurable season and our final league position of 8th is a credit to the work everyone has put in. Finally want to thank the fans for their support both home and away, everyone at the club appreciates it."

Whilst we hope to have a couple of features and updates during the closed season we wish all our supporters a great summer and we hope to see you next season.
