Yellows 3-2 Linby CW

Joe Butler starred as Hucknall Town ran out as 3-2 winners against Linby FC this afternoon in a tight pre-season affair. The forward tallied two assists and grabbed another one for himself to make the difference in an otherwise deadlocked game at Watnall Road.

The game began with Town seeing the majority of the possession, but struggling to break down a stiff visiting back-line. A moment of sheer class from Butler got things going, as he brought down a long ball superbly near the halfway line and drove past three defenders all the way into the box, where he squared it for Craig Westcarr to tap home with ease.

New signing Kieran Knight was just a save away from adding a quick second, as his close-range header was somehow kept out by the Linby goalkeeper.

Linby took advantage of a quick drinks break to send a free-kick into the area, and after a quick goalmouth scramble the ball was deflected in for a surprising equaliser. Butler continued to strut his stuff, as he took a pass from Westcarr in his stride to free himself in the box, but his shot rose over the bar.

Chances were few and far between as Westcarr had a dig from a tight angle to no avail as the half drew to a close.

Linby should’ve taken the lead in the 66th minute as a deflected pass played through their number nine, but the forward sent his shot skyward with just Louis Kinnerley to beat. Two chances came next for Butler ten minutes later, as a shot from range and a header in the box were both repelled by the keeper, as was a ranged strike from Sam Sims a few minutes after.

The lead finally returned to Hucknall as Butler brought down another long ball, before clipping it over the top for Knight to chase, who picked out the bottom corner.

Butler just about got one for himself two minutes later, as he raced in behind the Linby defence on the left before sending a deflected effort into the bottom corner. Linby capitalised on a poor clearance to get a consolation late on, and sent a free-kick over the bar to threaten a draw, but the whistle blew on a well-fought battle.
