EMCL 17th August 2019

Match Report by John Bevins

Town made two changes to the starting eleven for their first home game in the EMCL. Lenny Jenkins returned for Aaron Short and Cayne Maxwell moved to right midfield in place of Jamie Crawford allowing Oliver Brown back in at left back.

Despite early Graham Street Prim’s possession, the first chance fell to Matt Brian who shot wide after good work by Sam Simms.

A fine passing move involving Maxwell, Brian and Jack Smith created a chance for an unmarked Joe Ashurst to give Town a 1-0 lead after 19 minutes.

Soon after Brown’s cross picked out Brian in the six-yard box, his header found the net, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper. He was not denied for long as he slotted home a pass from Ashurst on 26 minutes to make it 2-0.

A weak back pass by GSP gave Brian the opportunity to return the favour to Ashurst who made no mistake from close range after 29 minutes.

Brian went close again with a chip shot that beat the ‘keeper but also the woodwork.

GSP threatened on 33 minutes but shot wide, despite this Ashurst and Brian continued to cause problems for the away defence, Ashurst created another chance for Brian but the keeper made a good save.

Smith made a twisting run outside the box, his shot was too hot for the keeper, Ashurst followed up but was denied by the assistant referee for offside.

Late in the half Adam Jablonski dealt with a couple of shots on target by GSP, whilst the GSP ‘keeper tipped another shot by Ashurst wide for a fruitless corner.

Half-time Hucknall Town 3-0 Graham Street Prims

Three minutes into the second half started with another run to the box by Smith, this time he passed to Michael Banister whose shot 'found' the net.

On 50 minutes GSP were awarded a penalty for a foul, which was saved by Jablonski, but the referee ordered a retake as Jablonski was off his line; the retake was also saved.

Town’s first substitution was Tom Hubbard on for Smith. After a fierce shot narrowly wide by Brian, Adam Nelson replaced Maxwell and then Kajally Danso replaced Brian to make his first appearance of the season.

Jablonski made a good save from a GSP free kick.

On 80 minutes another penalty was awarded this time to the yellows for a foul on Hubbard. Kial Thurman was sent to the sinbin for his objections. Ashurst sent the ‘keeper the wrong way to complete his hat-trick.

Town were awarded a second penalty this time for handball, but Nelson’s attempt had too much height on it.

Just when it looked like a clean sheet for Hucknall, Lewis Tooley eluded the defence and scored an injury time goal for GSP.
