Gedling progressed through to the quarterfinals of the Notts Senior Cup after Hucknall once again suffered penalty shoot out misery.
This was a rearranged fixture after the abandonment due to fog last week with Gedling leading 1 nil.
Hucknall once again started brightly and were unlucky not to be ahead in the first twenty minutes. Gedling came into the game more after that period but both defences did well. Keaton Sharpe saved well deflecting the ball onto the bar. Just as it looked to be goal less at half time Hucknall broke the deadlock. Matt Brian who had been a live wire all half weaved his way past the defenders right to the near post before giving the ball to Joe Butler to score from close range. In my opinion Hucknall who had played much better than last weeks tie deserved to have their noses in front at the break.
Hucknall began the second half in much the same vein and were rewarded when Tom Hubbard doubled the lead on 51 minutes finishing a fine flowing move by the home side.
At this point you could only see one winner but it wasn't to be as Gedling mounted a comeback. Courtney Hastings slotted home a penalty on 57 minutes with the home side claiming a free kick should have been awarded to them in the build up. Then Matt Newton equalised 4 minutes later.
Hucknalls Hubbard was then very lucky to stay on the pitch after a rash lunging tackle which referee Booth only saw as a Yellow. Gedling were then reduced to ten men after Thornton who had already been booked kicked the ball needlessly away.
This fired up Hucknall who brought on Akolwa for his first team debut in place of Crawford, Adam Nelson came on for Tom Hubbard. Hucknall kept knocking on the door but despite intense pressure on the Gedling goal couldn't find a way through. Gedling had a couple of free kicks in dangerous areas but Jablonski had little to do. The Lino's flag ruled out one Hucknall effort which looked very close and Aaron Short had penalty claims waved away.
Extra time was pretty much more of the same with the referee finding a non existent free kick to the away side as the ball was about to be slotted into the net. Gedling were happy at this point to go to penalties taking an age over everything to the extent that goalkeeper Sharpe got booked.
Pearson came on to play outfield in place of Akolwa probably to take one of the penalties.
How Hucknall didn't win the game I don't know but to penalties it went and once again Hucknall failed to win one. All the penalties went in up to the ninth though Gedlings 4th hit the underside of the bar on its way in. Matt Brian was the unlucky player to miss as Sharpe guessed right and easily saved Brian's effort.
It was left to Hucknall old boy Dean Gent to step up and spark hugh Gedling celebrations in putting the ball past Jablonski to send Gedling through.
